Newberry, SC — All three area varsity baseball teams from Newberry County advanced to the second round of the state playoffs following their performances on Tuesday, May 6th. Mid-Carolina High School, Newberry High School, and Whitmire all secured victories in the first round, setting the stage for competitive matchups ahead.

The Newberry Bulldogs overcame Orangeburg-Wilkinson with a score of 6-4. The Bulldogs now boast a season record of 14 wins and 11 losses, complemented by a 7-5 mark in region 5-AAA play. Newberry kicked off the game strong, making two runs in the first inning and extending their lead with four additional runs in the second inning. Although Orangeburg-Wilkinson managed to narrow the margin by scoring two runs in the fifth inning, they ultimately fell short against Newberry’s lead. The Bulldogs are scheduled to face Aynor, who currently holds a record of 14 wins and 4 losses with an 8-1 region 7-AAA record, on Thursday, May 8th, starting at 6:30 p.m.

In a closely contested match, the Whitmire Wolverines defeated Horse Creek Academy 7-5. Whitmire’s overall record now stands at 11-14, also boasting a 7-5 record in region 2-A. The Wolverines and Horse Creek Academy were locked in a tie at 1-1 after the first inning. However, Whitmire gained momentum, taking the lead at 5-4 by the end of the third inning. For an extra layer of security, Whitmire scored another run in the seventh inning. Pitcher Crue Keller had a commendable outing, throwing 6.2 innings and allowing 8 hits along with 3 runs; Blake Stribble stepped in to close the game. Despite tallying 10 hits as a team, Whitmire also made four defensive errors, indicating room for improvement as they advance.

Bringing a decisive victory to the county, the Mid-Carolina Rebels triumphed over Brashier Middle College Charter with an impressive 12-0 scoreline. With this victory, Mid-Carolina’s record improves to 19-7, remaining undefeated in region 3-AA with a perfect 9-0 record. The Rebels left an indelible mark on the game by achieving a no-hitter, a rare and challenging feat to accomplish. Their offensive performance was strong, as they registered five runs in the first inning, three in the second, and four in the third, contributing to a total of 12 hits throughout the game. The Rebels have yet to announce their next opponent as they look forward to continuing their playoff journey on Thursday, May 8th.
