History

Newberry’s story begins in the mid-18th century with a wave of European settlers, primarily Germans, Scots-Irish, and English. Drawn to the land, they arrived in large numbers during the 1750s. By 1785, Newberry County was officially carved out of the Ninety-Six District. The town of Newberry, strategically located in the center of the county, was chosen as the county seat just a few years later in 1789.

The land around Newberry was fertile, and cotton plantations soon dominated the landscape. Planters held significant political power in both the county and the town. The arrival of the railroad in 1851 further fueled Newberry’s growth, transforming it into a thriving trade center. This prosperity continued until the tumultuous 1860s.

The American Civil War cast a long shadow over Newberry. Newberry College, a local institution of higher learning, was repurposed as a hospital, tending to the wounds of both Confederate and later Union soldiers. The historic Newberry Court House, unlike many Southern structures, managed to escape the flames of General Sherman’s troops as they marched through the South.

The 20th century brought its own challenges. Racial tensions simmered nationwide, and Newberry was not immune. In 1919, during the Red Summer of racial violence, there was an attempted lynching of Elisha Harper, a Black man accused of insulting a young girl.

Despite these dark moments, Newberry has persevered. The city boasts a rich history reflected in the numerous sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. From the Boundary Street-Newberry Cotton Mills Historic District to the beautiful Wells Japanese Garden, these landmarks stand as testaments to Newberry’s past.

Today, Newberry continues to evolve. While its history is deeply rooted in agriculture and the cotton trade, the city offers a vibrant cultural scene and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re exploring its historic streets or enjoying the offerings of Newberry College, there’s something for everyone in this charming South Carolina town.
