Stormy Weather Hits Columbia, SC

Hey there, Columbia residents! Grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats, because we’ve got some serious weather rolling in. The National Weather Service has just issued a severe thunderstorm alert for our area, and it looks like we could be in for a wild ride tonight!

What’s Happening?

At around 8:54 PM Wednesday evening, the NWS alerted us to potential thunderstorms that could last until 9:45 PM, specifically affecting Newberry and Lexington counties. So, if you live in places like Chapin, Melvin Park, or Little Mountain, you’ll want to keep an eye out!

The Storm’s Features

Expect some gusty winds that might hit around 50 mph along with penny-sized hail (we’re talking 0.75 inches). A particularly strong thunderstorm was spotted near Dreher Island State Park, just northwest of Highway 6 at Lake Murray Dam, and it’s making its way northwest at a leisurely pace of 5 mph. Sounds like it might not be in a hurry to leave anytime soon!

Potential Hazards

So what should you look out for? Well, those gusty winds may lead to fallen tree limbs and might send unsecured items like lawn furniture tumbling. In fact, there have already been reports of dime-sized hail swirling near Chapin. What does this mean for you? If you’re outside, consider finding shelter to steer clear of possible lightning. Just a heads up, lightning strikes the U.S. around 25 million times a year, and summer is when it’s most active. It can be quite dangerous!

Driving and Flooding Caution

If you’ve got plans for the roads tonight, you’ll want to exercise extra caution. With the thunderstorms comes the risk of hydroplaning—that’s when your vehicle starts sliding uncontrollably on wet surfaces because water builds up in front of your tires. Also, since localized flooding is likely, especially with current forecasts, make sure to drive carefully and avoid flooded areas.

Severe Weather Timeline

So what’s the weather looking like for the rest of the week? The storms are expected to arrive in full force between 3 PM and 8 PM in the Midlands. However, on Monday, we might see the storms impact the southern Midlands around 1 PM. And while it’s going to be rainy, we could also see that rain taper off by Tuesday. Just a little refresher for your week—additional showers may roll in on Wednesday and Thursday!

Upcoming Temperatures

On Monday, before the storm kicks in, we’re anticipating highs that may reach around 80 degrees. But don’t get too comfy—by the weekend, temperatures could rise into the 90s. Talk about a weather rollercoaster!

Preparation is Key

In the face of all this stormy weather, it’s crucial to prepare. Make sure to secure any items outside that could potentially blow away, especially trampolines and patio furniture. The NWS is keeping a watchful eye out for severe weather in Columbia, and with the potential for straight-line winds, damage could be widespread. Stay safe, Columbia!

Stay Tuned!

As the weather unfolds, make sure to stay updated with local alerts and keep those safety measures in mind. Columbia, we may be in for an adventure this evening—take care out there!
