JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Newberry College football stretched its winning run to six games Saturday in Jefferson City, outlasting Carson-Newman 23-21 at Burke-Tarr Stadium after the Eagles pulled within two early in the fourth quarter.
Newberry improved to 8-2, including a 6-2 mark against South Atlantic Conference foes. Carson-Newman, playing its homecoming and senior day game, took only its second loss of the year.
Quarterback Mason Kidd went 21 of 36 for 266 yards and two scores. His first touchdown, a 44-yard throw to Will Young V, came on the opening drive. Young V finished with a game-high 111 receiving yards on five catches.
Jonah Norris scored on the ground and through the air, running 16 times for 56 yards and catching seven passes for 68 yards. His 5-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter made it 23-14.
Carson-Newman answered with a 46-yard run with 14:51 left, but the Newberry defense allowed nothing more. Jay Jeffries had 10 tackles and Dylan Locklear made an interception as the Wolves forced two turnovers.
A win next week clinches a place in the conference championship game. Newberry hosts Anderson University at Setzler Field on Saturday, Nov. 14, with a 1 p.m. kickoff on Senior Day.
