CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Newberry Wolves opened their men’s basketball schedule Friday night with a lopsided trip to the Lowcountry, falling 112-66 to the College of Charleston at TD Arena.
No Newberry player reached double figures except Stanislaw Romer, whose 12 points topped the visitors. Matthew Foor and Landon Harrison each added seven, and Foor also came away with two steals.
Charleston never trailed after the opening minutes. The Cougars hit a three-pointer less than five minutes in to go up 18-0, and they carried a 52-27 cushion into halftime. Newberry scored 39 points after the break, but the hosts kept stretching the margin.
Tavari Johnson led Charleston with 20 points, 17 of them before halftime, and Eli Ellis added 15. The Cougars piled up 16 steals, a TD Arena record for the program, and their 112 points set a new arena mark for a regulation game.
The two schools have now met 109 times, and Charleston is 3-0 against Newberry since moving to Division I. Charleston, now 2-0, plays next at Temple on Wednesday.
