High School Sports Update: Fall Season Kicks Off in Vermont

The fall season is officially underway across Vermont as high school athletes take to the fields and courts in soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running. The excitement is palpable as teams compete to qualify for state championships and showcase their skills.

Golf Division Highlights

In golf, the Division I qualifiers took place at the Quechee Club on the Lakeland course. Rutland’s Sebastian Pell led the day with a remarkable score of 71, earning the title of medalist. Other teams that qualified for states include Champlain Valley (304), South Burlington (315), and Rutland (317). Key individual qualifiers from this division were Will Eaton (St. Johnsbury) at 73 and Austin Kelley (Spaulding) at 79.

Meanwhile, the Division II qualifiers were hosted at the Neshobe Golf Club. Otter Valley’s Lucas Politano topped the leaderboard with a score of 70. Teams like Harwood and Stowe also clinched their spots for the state championships, showcasing strong performances across the board.

Soccer Game Results

In soccer, Colchester earned a 3-1 victory over Mount Mansfield, with Fiona McHugh scoring two goals. Mount Mansfield put up a good fight but ultimately fell short, despite Abby Hussey netting one goal. In another thrilling match, South Burlington shut out BFA-St. Albans with a final score of 4-0, highlighted by Connor Watson’s contributions with one goal and two assists.

Fans can look forward to more matches this week, including Burlington at Champlain Valley and Rice at BFA-St. Albans. These games are set to take place at 6 p.m., building anticipation among local supporters eager to see their teams in action.
