Prosperity – The Prosperity Police Department has welcomed a new officer, Hampton Smith, who officially joined the force in early April 2024. Originally from Georgia, Smith previously served in Nebraska and brings with him a background in military service. He chose law enforcement as his profession primarily due to his passion for engaging with children and youth in the community.

As Smith begins his duties, he intends to establish a strong presence within Prosperity. He has already taken on responsibility for organizing the town’s annual National Night Out event, aiming to foster community involvement and communication. Smith has an open-door policy, encouraging local residents to reach out with questions or concerns.

In addition to welcoming Officer Smith, the Prosperity Police Department is responding to safety concerns following multiple recent criminal activities in the area. Authorities are currently searching for a white SUV after reports emerged of a young boy screaming for help on US-76 by Dollar General. These reports were made at approximately 3:30 p.m. on the same day of Smith’s announcement.

In an ongoing investigation, police arrested Jordan Parker Rawls in connection with a series of auto-break-ins occurring on Eureka and Armfield Streets. Witnesses observed Rawls checking vehicles and stealing items. He was apprehended while approaching his moped with stolen belongings, leading to multiple charges of breaking into motor vehicles. Following his arrest, Rawls was taken to the Newberry County Detention Center.

Prosperity Police Chief Wesley Palmore stated the importance of residents locking their vehicles and removing valuables to deter theft, reiterating ongoing efforts to protect community safety.

Furthermore, police made several arrests related to a shoplifting incident at the Bi-Lo grocery store. Five individuals were taken into custody: Timothy Kinlaw, 33; Joshua Martez Lucas, 26; Pearl Elizabeth Potter; Adama Tiffany Pastures; and Monifah Denise Lucas. Kinlaw and Lucas entered the store with a juvenile, instructing the minor to leave with a shopping cart full of stolen items valued at $281. Meanwhile, the other three adults waited in a vehicle outside to assist in loading the merchandise.

All five individuals were located near the store shortly after the incident. Upon booking, crack cocaine was discovered in Joshua Lucas’s anal cavity, increasing the severity of the charges against him. Kinlaw and Lucas face various charges connected to theft, while Potter, Pastures, and Monifah Lucas are charged with shoplifting and criminal conspiracy. Following their arrests, all five have been booked at the Newberry County Detention Center.

This recent series of incidents has highlighted ongoing crime concerns in Prosperity, prompting local law enforcement to reiterate their commitment to community safety and crime prevention.

In summary, with Officer Hampton Smith on board, the Prosperity Police Department is not only focusing on community engagement but also addressing recent criminal activities through arrests and public awareness initiatives. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their belongings.
