Thunderstorms Strike Central Orangeburg, Bringing Wind and Hail
Orangeburg is currently is experiencing a series of strong thunderstorms, leaving residents on alert as the weather takes a turn. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an updated report at 5:40 p.m. this Friday, warning that these storms could last until 6:30 p.m., affecting Central Orangeburg, Southeastern Orangeburg, Barnwell, and Bamberg counties.
What to Expect During the Storm
According to the NWS, these storms can produce wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph and may even generate marble-sized hail, measuring around 0.5 inches. As of the latest report, Doppler radar has been tracking these audacious storms along a line stretching from approximately 8 miles northwest of Holly Hill to various locations, including Branchville and Denmark. They are moving east at about 30 mph.
Residents in the area should proceed with caution, as gusty winds might easily knock down tree limbs and cause unsecured objects to fly around. While the damage is likely to be minor, it’s always better to be prepared and safe. The affected locations include Orangeburg, Bamberg, Denmark, Holly Hill, Branchville, and several others, including local airports and highways—most notably, Interstate 26 between mile markers 150 and 169, and Interstate 95 between mile markers 85 and 93.
Stay Safe During Severe Weather
The NWS is urging everyone to seek shelter indoors during the storm. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is still in effect until 8 p.m., so stay alert and keep an eye on the changing weather. Remember that lightning is a significant hazard during thunderstorms, as it strikes the U.S. approximately 25 million times a year. The risk increases as a storm approaches, peaks when it’s overhead, and diminishes once it moves away. On average, 20 people are killed each year due to lightning strikes, so it’s crucial to be cautious.
Here are a few helpful safety tips for when a thunderstorm hits:
- If you’re outdoors, try to find shelter inside a sturdy building.
- Stay away from windows and doors.
- If you’re in a vehicle, avoid touching metal parts and keep the windows up.
- Listen for updates and heed any local warnings.
The Dangers of Hydroplaning
If the weather worsens and rain starts to accumulate on the roads, it’s essential to be aware of hydroplaning. This term describes what can happen when your vehicle starts to slide uncontrollably on wet surfaces. When too much water builds up in front of your tires, it can create a situation where your tires ride on a thin layer of water rather than making contact with the road, which can cause you to lose control. Common factors that lead to hydroplaning include:
- Your vehicle’s speed.
- The amount of water on the roadway.
- The tread depth of your tires.
If you find yourself in a situation where you begin to hydroplane, remember to stay calm. Instead of slamming on the brakes, ease off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. Maintaining control is key!
Keep an Eye on the Weather
As the storm unfolds, make sure to monitor updates from the NWS and stay informed. It’s always better to be proactive when it comes to severe weather. Let’s hope the storm passes quickly and leaves everyone safe!
