In addition to academic achievements, the Newberry College women’s lacrosse team is also excelling on the field this season. They recently improved their record to 4-1 after defeating UVA Wise 14-12 at Carl Smith Stadium. The team remains unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play, standing at 2-0.
In the game against UVA Wise, Newberry demonstrated a strong start, leading 5-0 after the first quarter. Emma Jobs opened the scoring with a goal off an assist from Amelia Hawkes. Other players contributing to the scoreboard during the first quarter included Dakota Beasley, Trysten Burns, and Scythe Shephard.
The first half concluded with Newberry leading 8-6. However, the competition tightened in the third quarter as the game reached a tied score of 8-8. Newberry managed to regain their lead with goals from both Elias and Jobs, finishing the third quarter up 11-9.
Jobs then extended Newberry’s lead early in the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the game, bringing the score to 12-9. Trysten Burns scored the final goal with just over a minute left in the game, securing the victory for Newberry.
The Newberry College women’s lacrosse team is set to continue their season with their next game on March 5th against Belmont Abbey College at Setzler Field.
