Newberry, South Carolina

Newberry College has announced the appointment of Jameson Keppeler as the new assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Keppeler will work alongside head coach Aletta Macheli, who expressed enthusiasm about the addition to the coaching staff, highlighting his energy, passion, and valuable experience.

Prior to joining Newberry, Keppeler spent time as the assistant tennis coach at the State University of New York at Oswego. His coaching experience also includes a tenure at the renowned IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, known for cultivating elite athletes. Keppeler is a 2019 graduate of Assumption University in Massachusetts, where he was a team captain and a three-year starter for the Greyhounds’ tennis team.

Originally from Fayetteville, New York, Keppeler continued his education at Le Moyne College in New York, where he earned his master’s degree. His background in collegiate athletics and coaching at various levels positions him well to contribute to the success of the Newberry College tennis teams.

Academic Achievements of Tennis Student-Athletes

In addition to the coaching change, Newberry College recently celebrated the academic success of its tennis players, with four women’s tennis student-athletes earning College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors. To qualify for this recognition, student-athletes must be at least sophomores academically and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The awarded players include: Emma Arnal, a sophomore majoring in business who plays #1 singles and #1 doubles; Renee Dorval, a senior business major, playing #6 singles and #1 doubles; Alexa Gamborino-Suarez, a senior in sports communications, competing at #5 singles and #2 doubles; and Margarita Roshka, a junior studying criminal justice who plays at #2 singles and #2 doubles. Additionally, Daniel Watson, a sophomore studying psychology and typically competing in #1 doubles and #3 singles, earned Academic All-District recognition on the men’s tennis team.

Upcoming Athletics Hall of Fame Induction

Newberry College will also honor six former athletes during the upcoming Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony scheduled for September 13. This event will recognize the achievements of Albert Baur, Deral Brown, Blake Mayes, Samantha Parrish, Beth Williamson, and Raleigh Yeldell. Baur, a consensus Division 2 All-American in 2015, is known for holding multiple records in baseball. Brown, a two-time NCAA qualifier and All-American in wrestling, currently serves as the head coach of the wrestling team at Newberry.

Blake Mayes made his mark as a defensive tackle for the football team from 1995 to 1998, while Parrish led the volleyball team to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and holds the record for the most career kills. Williamson has distinguished herself as a first-team All-South Atlantic Conference tennis player and was named the 2017 Newberry College Female Athlete of the Year. Finally, Yeldell earned both the South Atlantic Conference and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year titles in 2016 and holds numerous records in football.

The Newberry College Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1976, and with this year’s induction, the total number of honorees will reach 196.
