Newberry, South Carolina – Newberry College has celebrated significant accomplishments in both academics and athletics, with five men’s basketball student-athletes being honored for their academic excellence, and two standout high school players committing to join the team next season.

Five members of the Newberry College men’s basketball team have made it onto the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Honors Court for the 2024-25 academic year. The players recognized include Andrew Robinson, James Lovorn, Kobe Adams, Malakhi Stremlow, and Malik Joseph, all of whom achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. This year, over 2,400 players were named to the NABC Honors Court, highlighting the academic achievements of college basketball athletes nationwide.

In addition to their Honors Court recognition, James Lovorn and Malakhi Stremlow were acknowledged in March as part of the College Sports Communicators Men’s Basketball Academic All-District team. Both players contributed significantly to their team’s performance, as they participated in over 90% of the Wolves’ games during the season while maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5. Notably, Lovorn was the only player from Newberry College to start all 28 games in the prior season, further underscoring his vital role on the team.

Newberry College’s commitment to academic success extends beyond basketball. The Wolves baseball team led the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) with a cumulative team GPA of 3.629, marking the 12th consecutive year they have held this distinction. Additionally, the softball team topped all SAC softball teams, boasting a GPA of 3.796 for the 2024-25 academic year. Overall, eleven out of the twenty SAC programs sponsored by Newberry achieved a higher team GPA than the league average for their respective sports.

The women’s basketball team performed commendably as well, tying for third place with a GPA of 3.505. Various other teams also excelled, with field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s tennis finishing in the top three within their sports.

On the recruitment front, Newberry College has welcomed two new signings for its basketball program. Jada Brown, a senior from Richmond Hill High School, will be joining the college after leading her team to a 19-8 record and earning First Team All-Region honors. Brown expressed enthusiasm about the Newberry College environment, highlighting the welcoming nature of the coaches and players.

Another addition to the team is Morgan Thompson, a senior from Scotland High School who was recognized as her conference’s player of the year in the 2022-23 season. Thompson amassed over 1,000 career points during her high school career, averaging 19.4 points and 5.6 assists per game last season.

This news follows a challenging season for the Newberry College men’s basketball team, which ended with an overall record of 6-22 and a conference record of 5-19 during the 2024-25 season. The team is looking to rebuild and improve with the addition of new talent, including Joshua Goodman from Denmark-Olar, who has also committed to Newberry College. Goodman is noted for his exceptional performance in leading his high school team to a historic state championship victory, scoring a game-high 28 points in the final and receiving All-State selection honors.

Overall, Newberry College continues to emphasize academic excellence and athletic talent, showcasing its dedication to developing well-rounded student-athletes.
