Newberry College’s baseball and softball teams have led the South Atlantic Conference in academic performance for the 2024-25 academic year. With impressive GPAs, baseball achieved 3.629 while softball excelled at 3.796. Newberry, South Carolina – Newberry College Athletics has once again demonstrated academic excellence, with the college’s baseball and softball teams leading their respective categories in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) for the 2024-25 academic year. The Wolves baseball team achieved a stellar team GPA of 3.629, marking an impressive 12th consecutive year of success in maintaining the highest academic standard within the SAC.

Similarly, the Wolves softball team also excelled, achieving the top GPA in SAC softball with a remarkable score of 3.796. Out of the 20 SAC programs sponsored by Newberry, eleven showcased team GPAs that exceeded the league average for their sports.

Among the other notable performances, the women’s basketball team tied for 3rd place with a team GPA of 3.505. In addition, the field hockey team finished 2nd with a GPA of 3.634, while men’s golf also achieved 2nd place with a GPA of 3.623. The women’s golf team similarly secured a 2nd place finish with a team GPA of 3.669.

Additional Athletic Accomplishments

The men’s lacrosse team achieved a 3rd place GPA of 3.276, while the women’s lacrosse team matched their male counterparts with a GPA of 3.505. The men’s soccer team produced a GPA of 3.482, ranking 2nd in the conference, and the women’s tennis team secured 2nd place with an impressive GPA of 3.836. The men’s tennis team finished above the SAC average for its sport with a GPA of 3.94.

Commissioner’s Honor Roll Recognition

In recognition of their academic achievements, Newberry College had 350 student-athletes named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the second consecutive year. To qualify for this honor, student-athletes must have participated in a championship sport and maintained a GPA of 3.30 or higher. Notably, men’s lacrosse led with 51 student-athletes recognized, followed by baseball with 45 and football with 39. For the women’s side, softball topped the list with 26, closely followed by field hockey with 22, and both soccer and lacrosse with 21 each.

Among the teams, men’s golf boasted the highest percentage of roster members honored, with 91% (11 out of 12), while women’s tennis followed with 88% (8 of 9), and women’s golf with 87% (7 of 8). Both softball and baseball showcased 86% of their members on the honor roll.

New Appointment in Athletics Department

In addition to academic achievements, Newberry College has announced the appointment of Janet Wolbert as the new Associate Athletics Director for Compliance. Wolbert brings with her extensive experience from her role at Concordia University Chicago, where she served since 2016. Her prior positions included Assistant and Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator, following her promotion to Director of Athletics in June 2023.

Wolbert began her career in 1996 as an athletic director, coach, and teacher at Bethany Lutheran School in Houston, Texas. Over the years, she accumulated a wealth of experience, including positions at Oak Ridge High School as a math teacher and basketball coach, as well as at Freedom High School in Orlando, where she also served as Assistant Athletic Director.

Wolbert holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Concordia University Chicago and an MBA from the Crummer Business School at Rollins College. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree at Concordia University Chicago. Her leadership and compliance expertise are anticipated to significantly benefit Newberry College Athletics in the upcoming years.
