Miami High Schools Make Headlines in Football and Bowling as Coaching Changes and Dominant Performances Highlight Local Sports Scene

Miami – In a significant turn of events for the boys’ bowling team at Miami Columbus, long-time coach Adam Scholer has announced his decision to step down after an impressive 35 seasons. Under his leadership, the Explorers achieved major success, including a state championship in 1999 and an individual state title for Robert MacKarvich in 2003. The team also enjoyed an astonishing 12 consecutive undefeated seasons, securing a total of 16 district championships throughout his tenure.

Scholer was a strong advocate for high school bowling in South Florida, consistently seeking to promote the sport. Reflecting on his time coaching, Scholer said, “It has been an incredible run, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” The Explorers, who recently finished as runners-up at the GMAC tournament in 2024, advanced to the state competition, where they placed 17th.

Meanwhile, on the football front, the Miami True North team scored a decisive 42-0 victory against Miami Palmer Trinity in the Region 4-1A quarterfinals. Quarterback Zac Katz had a standout performance, going 11-of-15 for 157 yards and a touchdown, while also adding two rushing touchdowns. The Titans’ defense was impressive too, with players like Camaul King and Ricky Carter making significant contributions. With this win, True North (8-3) will face Miami Edison (7-4) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday at Southridge Park.

In boys’ soccer, the Miami Columbus team took home a close 2-1 victory against Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Jorge Gonzalez-Tello scored both goals for Columbus, lifting their record to 3-1.

Other notable games included the Davie NSU University School boys tying with Miami Gulliver Prep at 1-1, as well as Parkland Stoneman Douglas edging Weston Cypress Bay 1-0. Overall, the high school sports scene in Miami is filled with exciting results and performances as teams gear up for the rest of their seasons.

As basketball season approaches, teams are participating in preseason tip-off events, setting the stage for the regular season. The annual Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic is also on the horizon, scheduled for December 27, 28, and 30, featuring a diverse range of teams from various states and regions.

For schools in the area reporting their varsity results, top performers are encouraged to email details for publication.
