News Summary

Lynch’s Woods County Park in Newberry, SC, is closed for maintenance after severe weather caused damage. The closure ensures visitor safety as crews clear debris and prepare for the upcoming Spartan Race. Limited access will continue until the area is deemed safe, with significant renovations planned for the park in the future.

Newberry, SC – Lynch’s Woods County Park is temporarily closed due to maintenance and repair work following severe weather conditions, as announced by local authorities. The closure is necessary for crews to clear debris resulting from recent hurricane activity and ongoing storms. Park officials have indicated that the use of heavy equipment and the increased risk of falling trees and limbs have prompted this decision, placing a priority on visitor safety.

Residents have been warned not to ignore barricades or caution tape set up at the park, reinforcing the Sheriff’s Office message of prioritizing public safety during this maintenance period. Access to the park will be restricted for all vehicles, walkers, bikers, and equestrians until the area is deemed safe for public use.

The park closure comes just days before the Spartan Race event, scheduled for November 18-19, 2023, in Newberry. While most of the event activities will occur on Johnson Family Farm, some of the race routes will traverse through Lynch’s Woods County Park. To facilitate course setup and ensure safety, inner gates to the gravel road around the park will close starting November 13, 2023, and the main gate will shut on November 17, 2023, remaining closed until November 21, 2023. During this time, although vehicular access to picnic shelters will remain available, only hiking and biking trails will be open to the public.

Visitors are advised to steer clear of construction areas for Spartan obstacles, ensuring their safety while the park is being prepared for the event. The Spartan Race features several events, including a 21K and 50K Beast, 5K Sprint, 10K Super, and various kids’ races, promising to draw significant crowds to the community.

In addition to immediate concerns surrounding the Spartan Race, Lynch’s Woods Park is in line for significant improvements, having recently received a $40,000 grant from South Carolina Parks, Recreation, and Tourism for upgrades. Planned renovations include essential repairs to bridges, enhanced security measures, and the addition of an ADA-compliant half-mile trail and ADA parking spaces. There will also be the installation of a bike repair station and trail counters to monitor usage and accessibility, with completion of these renovations anticipated by next year. These enhancements aim to make the park a more inviting destination for both local residents and visitors.

Furthermore, Lynch’s Woods Park has been designated as a Track Trail by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, which allows kids to join in self-guided adventure tours, further promoting recreational activities. It is recognized as an underutilized area, with efforts underway to attract new visitors and provide enjoyable experiences for the community, reinforcing the park’s potential as a vital resource for outdoor activity and engagement.
