Heartbreaking events unfold in Prosperity, S.C.

Somber news was received on the 11th of June, 2024 that a K-9 officer lost his life in the line of duty in Newberry County. The K-9, known as Coba, was shot by a suspect hiding away in a family member’s home. The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed the tragic news, leaving the community of Prosperity, South Carolina in shock.

A Hero’s Tale: The Service of K-9 Coba

Upon SLED agents and deputies arrival at the suspect’s location to serve a fugitive felony warrant, the situation took a turn for the worse. The suspect emerged from his hiding place and opened fire on K-9 Coba. Despite being injured, Coba remained on duty, giving SLED and the deputy a chance to return fire. Coba was promptly taken to an emergency veterinarian, while the suspect was transported to a nearby trauma center. Aside from Coba, several deputies were treated for minor cuts and injuries.

Before his untimely death, Coba, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois mix, had been an irreplaceable part of the SLED’s SWAT Team and K-9 Tracking Team. He joined SLED in 2021 and took part in many trainings and operations that assured safety for the community and his team members. His service in so many successful operations earned him a special place within the force and in the hearts of the community.

Governor Honors Fallen Hero

Henry McMaster, the Governor of South Carolina, gave a heartfelt message mourning the extraordinary K-9. In his tribute, he recognized the daily challenges and risks law enforcement officers, especially the K-9 units, face.

Further Investigation

The condition of the shooting suspect has not yet been officially reported. Following the protocol, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office has been called upon to extensively investigate the incident, with updates expected in due course.

Honoring the Heroic K-9

A memorial service to pay respect to the fallen K-9 Coba has been scheduled for June 19, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be conducted at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy on 5400 Broad River Road in Columbia. As the community of Prosperity and Newberry County mourns their loss, they also come together to honor their fallen hero and offer solace to each other in these challenging times.
