Born on February 4, 1952, in Charleston, South Carolina, McGowan was the son of Joseph W. McGowan, Jr. and Ellen Virginia Mims McGowan. His journey began in the public schools of Charleston, where he graduated from St. Andrew’s Parish High School. During his high school years, he showcased his musical talent by playing keyboards for several bands, including “The Miracle Makers,” “The Shoresmen,” and “The Counts.” His musical career allowed him to perform at various notable venues, including “The UFO Club” in Columbia and “Alice Underground” on Folly Beach, where he backed artists such as “The Original Drifters” and Major Lance.
McGowan pursued higher education at Newberry College, graduating with honors and becoming an active member of the Kappa Alpha Order, serving as chapter president during his senior year. He then earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, beginning a legal career that led him to private practice. In 1999, he was elected to the family court bench, a position he held until his retirement in 2017. Following his judicial career, McGowan established a successful mediation practice, further contributing to the legal community.
In addition to his judicial responsibilities, McGowan served as a commissioner of public works for the city of Laurens. He was also a member of the University of South Carolina Board of Visitors and was a dedicated supporter of the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Joseph W. McGowan, III is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Suzie) Harvey McGowan, and their four children: Dr. Joseph W. McGowan, IV; Marshall West McGowan; Jay Alan O’Dell; and Janna Leigh Brown. He also leaves behind several grandchildren, including Lucas Jay O’Dell, Jacob Parker O’Dell, and Caroline Grace Brown, along with adopted grandchildren Kevin, Alex, Elijah, Wyatt, Emily, and Avery O’Dell. A sister, Pamela Jo McGowan Miller, resides in Loganville, Georgia, and is also part of his surviving family.
In honor of McGowan’s life and contributions to the community, a celebration of life reception is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM at the Lake Rabon Estates Clubhouse in Laurens. The family will be receiving guests at their home during this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Laurens.
