Florence, South Carolina – Former FedEx Employee Charged with Lottery Ticket Theft

Trevor Jamir Hampton, a 25-year-old former employee of FedEx, has been charged with multiple counts of theft involving South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) scratch-off tickets. The theft occurred on August 19, 2025, at the FedEx Ground facility in Florence, where Hampton was employed at the time.

The lottery tickets in question were stolen from a damaged package during transit, which was being shipped to a retailer. Hampton allegedly admitted to stealing the tickets after he was read his Miranda rights. Surveillance footage from a Cruizers convenience store in Florence captured him as he attempted to cash one of the stolen tickets.

Investigation and Charges Filed

An investigation was initiated at the request of the South Carolina Education Lottery, which led the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to file formal charges against Hampton on September 18, 2025. He now faces two counts of Intent to Defraud, Counterfeit Game Tickets as a result of this incident.

SLED officials confirmed that Hampton was clearly identified through both internal FedEx footage and external security footage from the convenience store. Multiple witnesses, including the investigating officer, are expected to provide testimony to support the allegations against him.

Court Proceedings and Employment Status

Currently, Hampton has been booked into the Florence County Detention Center, and the case will be prosecuted by the 12th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. At this time, Hampton’s employment status with FedEx is unclear, and the investigation into the theft is ongoing.

Background Context

Lottery fraud, especially involving counterfeit tickets, poses significant risks to state education funding, which primarily relies on lottery revenues. Such incidents can lead to a loss of trust among retailers and the public, affecting the integrity of the lottery system. The theft of the lottery tickets from the damaged package highlights vulnerabilities within the shipping process and raises questions about security measures in place at delivery facilities.

The SCEL operates under stringent regulations designed to ensure the integrity and fairness of the lottery process. It is crucial for any allegations of theft or fraud to be thoroughly investigated to uphold the standards set for lottery operations in South Carolina.

As authorities continue to delve into the case, community members are reminded of the importance of vigilance regarding fraud and theft, particularly in settings where large sums of money are involved.
