Winter Storm Warning Issued for Columbia, SC

Columbia, SC, is bracing for a wintry blast as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning that will be in effect from Friday at 10 a.m. until Saturday at 7 a.m. Residents should prepare for a mix of ice, snow, and sleet that can make travel tricky—and in some cases, nearly impossible.

What to Expect

According to the NWS, heavy mixed precipitation is expected during this time frame. Ice accumulations could range from two-tenths to three-tenths of an inch, and parts of east central Georgia and central South Carolina may see total snow and sleet accumulations of up to one-half inch.

The impacts of this weather will not just be an inconvenience. The NWS warns that “power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice.” If your commute includes a Friday evening drive home, you might want to reconsider heading out. Hazards on the roads could create very unsafe driving conditions, leading to what could be a stressful and difficult drive.

Safety Precautions

For those who must travel, the NWS has provided several safety tips to keep in mind. First and foremost, ensure that your vehicle has an extra flashlight, food, and water in case of an emergency. In the event you encounter hazardous conditions, dialing 5 1 1 will connect you to the latest road conditions for your area.

It’s a startling statistic, but on average, weather-related vehicle crashes result in more than 6,000 fatalities and over 480,000 injuries across the country each year. So be sure to slow down and stay safe if you find yourself driving in wintry weather.

Driving Under Winter Conditions

If you notice the temperature hovering around freezing, take extra caution. It’s a good idea to assume that ice is present on roadways and adjust your driving accordingly. Keep in mind that if there is ice on power lines or tree branches, the added weight could cause them to snap and fall. It’s best to avoid driving during these icy conditions whenever possible.

Choosing Your Route

If you absolutely have to go out, consider selecting a route that has the least number of trees and power lines. Should you come across any downed power lines, please do not attempt to touch them. Instead, call 911 to report the situation and ensure your safety and that of those around you.

Stay Prepared

Winter weather can often be unpredictable, and it’s crucial to remain vigilant and prepared. By being proactive and following these safety tips, you can help ensure you and your loved ones stay safe during what is expected to be a challenging weather event this weekend.

Remember, Columbia, keep warm, stay safe, and let’s all look out for one another as we weather this storm together!
