Columbia, SC Mourns the Loss of Beloved Dentist Dr. Edward Benton DuBose

Columbia is grieving the recent loss of one of its cherished residents, Dr. Edward Benton DuBose, affectionately known as Benny, who passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 84. Surrounded by his beloved wife of 60 years, Benny left this world but leaves behind a remarkable legacy brimming with compassion and community service.

A Lifelong Passion for Dentistry

Benny entered this world on May 28, 1940, as the third of five children of Carl Butler and Minnie Reynolds DuBose. After graduating from Dreher High School in 1958, he took a bold step by serving as a corpsman in the United States Navy, stationed in sunny Pensacola, Florida. During those years, he developed a conviction for service and excellence that would guide his future endeavors.

After his military service, Benny pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of South Carolina. It was there that he became involved with the Sigma Nu fraternity and met Lynn Fishburne, a fellow graduate who would share his life journey. Their love story blossomed alongside their educational pursuits.

From Dentistry Student to Esteemed Dentist

In 1966, Benny took a significant step forward by being accepted into the School of Dentistry at the University of Louisville, where he excelled academically and was recognized as a leader among his peers. Upon earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree with honors in 1970, he began his professional journey in dentistry.

For 27 fruitful years, Benny practiced as an associate dentist alongside Dr. Jim Wiseman in Newberry, SC. His gentle demeanor and dedication to his patients earned him the affectionate title of “the dentist’s dentist”, a testament to his exemplary reputation among fellow dental professionals. In 1997, seeking new horizons, he relocated to Pawleys Island to establish his own practice.

Community Contributions and Retirement Activities

Retirement didn’t slow him down. Benny immersed himself in hobbies such as fishing, golf, and tennis, but his commitment to giving back remained strong. In 2013, he founded the Dr. Edward Benton DuBose Dental Clinic at Helping Hands in Georgetown County, offering free dental services to those in need. His dedication to transforming lives through healthcare remains an essential part of his legacy.

A Family Man

Benny is survived by his two sons, Steven Martin DuBose, PhD, from Fort Worth, TX, and Brett Benton DuBose (married to Jennifer) from Greenwood, SC. To add joy to his life, he enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren: Mary Clare and Alice from Fort Worth, along with Ellie and Jenna from Greenwood. Benny also leaves behind his brothers Carl “Buddy” (married to Mary Anne), Francis (married to Judy), both residing in Columbia, SC, and David (married to Jennie) of Newberry, SC. Sadly, he was predeceased by his sister, Patricia DuBose Logothetis.

A Celebration of Life

A memorial service honoring Benny’s life will take place at 2:00 PM on February 17, 2025, at The Abbey at Pawleys Island, with a reception following the service to celebrate his extraordinary journey. For those who wish to honor his legacy in a special way, memorial contributions can be made to the very clinic he started to help others.

Funeral arrangements have been directed by the Downtown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home and Crematory in Georgetown, SC. The community will forever hold Benny’s legacy close to their hearts, remembering him not just as a dentist, but as a loving husband, father, and friend who dedicated his life to uplifting those around him.
