Severe Weather Leaves Thousands in Columbia Without Power
Columbia, SC (WOLO) – It’s been quite a wild night here in Columbia and surrounding areas as severe weather rolled through, leaving thousands of residents in the dark. Things really took a turn when reports came in of wind gusts reaching over 60 mph across the Midlands. What a night it has been!
Power Outages Across Multiple Counties
According to the latest updates, it seems like the storm didn’t hold back its power. As of 10:30 p.m. Saturday evening, an astonishing 34,989 residents in Lexington County are without electricity. That’s a huge chunk of the population.
Moving over to Saluda County, around 8,567 residents are also facing power outages. In the larger Richland County, the situation isn’t much better, with 17,490 customers affected by the outages. Fairfield County isn’t escaping unscathed either, as there are 1,978 customers reporting power loss.
This brings the total statewide to a staggering over 145,000 customers who have lost power due to these adverse weather conditions. The power outage statistics depict just how widespread the impact has been, with about 47,678 Dominion Energy customers and 45,339 Duke Energy customers suffering from outages.
Impact of the Storm and Emergency Services Response
The devastation has also led to reports from Sheriff Lee Foster in Newberry County, who indicated that a wide area experienced either a tornado or a downburst stemming from a line of storms. This highlights the seriousness of what we’ve faced tonight. Numerous trees and power lines have come crashing down throughout the county. It’s a noticeable scene out there.
Sheriff Foster urged everyone to exercise caution, stating, “We were under a Thunderstorm Warning but no Tornado Watch/Warning issued. Emergency Services, DOT, and power crews are working diligently in dangerous conditions to restore power.” It’s crucial for residents to respect the emergency services and only call 911 in the event of a true emergency. They are well aware of the outages and are doing everything they can to fix the situation.
What’s Next?
As we look ahead, there is a glimmer of hope because conditions are expected to improve overnight. This could give our local power crews that much-needed opportunity to work on restoring power to affected areas without the added threat of severe weather.
So for now, while we all hope for a smooth restoration process and for our neighborhoods to brighten up again soon, let’s remain patient and stay safe. If anything, tonight has shown us how unpredictable Mother Nature can be. It’s definitely a good time to check in on your neighbors, especially those who may be more vulnerable in situations like this.
Stay tuned for further updates as we gather more information on recovery efforts and power restoration in the coming days. And remember, safety first!
