Hurricane Helene Disrupts High School Sports in Palm Beach County

As Hurricane Helene makes its way toward Florida’s Big Bend region, schools and sports events across Palm Beach County are feeling the impact. The Palm Beach County School District announced that all public schools will be closed on Thursday, ensuring the safety of students and staff as strong winds and rainfall are anticipated. In a statement, the district emphasized that, “All extracurricular activities, after-school programs, sports, school meetings, and other on-campus events are also canceled.”

The announcement means that all athletic events scheduled for Thursday have been called off. This includes various sports competitions across different schools. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” the district reiterated, highlighting that the expected sustained winds exceed safe limits for bus operations.

In addition to the public school closures, some private schools are also reacting to the approaching hurricane. For instance, Oxbridge Academy has canceled Wednesday’s girls golf match and has postponed Thursday’s boys golf, middle school volleyball, and cross country events. This reflects a broader trend as local institutions prioritize safety in light of the severe weather forecast.

Moreover, the football game between Inlet Grove and King’s Academy, which was originally set for Thursday, has now been rescheduled. It will take place on Monday, September 30, at 6 p.m.

A comprehensive list of the various football and volleyball events that have been postponed or canceled due to the hurricane will be provided as information comes in. In the meantime, athletes and teams are encouraged to focus on safety and stay tuned for updates regarding reschedules and cancellations.
