NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Human remains dug up behind a home in Waterloo have not been confirmed by scientific testing to belong to anyone, Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece said Wednesday night, pushing back on an earlier identification.
Hours before her statement, Laurens County’s coroner had identified the remains as Edwin Geer, 87, of Chappells, who has been missing for weeks. Kneece said evidence points to a possible link to Geer, but lab confirmation is still pending, and she urged people not to spread unverified details.
The shallow grave was discovered last week off Broadway Lane in Waterloo, in Laurens County. Because officials think the death likely happened in Newberry County, Kneece’s office took over the case.
The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for Geer, who lived in the Summerset Bay community. Deputies list him as endangered given his age. He is 5 feet 5 with thinning white hair and a weight near 145 pounds. His tan 2002 Chevrolet pickup, South Carolina tag XEZ770, is also missing.
SLED is working the case with both county offices. More details will come once identification is confirmed and family members are told.
