The Newberry College Lady Wolves volleyball team secured two victories against Elizabeth City State, out of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, as part of the Bulldog Invitational at Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina, this past weekend. The Lady Wolves defeated the Vikings in two matches, 3-1 and 3-0.
Elizabeth City State’s Lady Vikings finished the weekend with a 1-3 record in the tournament. They initially defeated Barton 3-2 in their first game before facing the Newberry College team. In their final match of the invitational, played Saturday afternoon, the Vikings lost 3-1 to Barton.
The Elizabeth City State Vikings football team also played this past Saturday, suffering a 17-14 loss to Fort Valley State at Roebuck Stadium. The Vikings held a 14-3 lead at halftime, but Fort Valley State mounted a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. A light rain began falling late in the fourth quarter during Fort Valley State’s decisive drive. The Vikings’ opportunity to extend their lead before halftime was thwarted by an interception inside the red zone. On second and 14 from Fort Valley’s 18-yard line, Vikings quarterback Navian Hilliard’s pass was intercepted and returned 59 yards. Fort Valley State then fumbled the ball on fourth and 19, which was recovered by Vikings defender Joe Griffin, who returned it 53 yards for a touchdown. The subsequent kick failed, leaving the score at 14-3. The Vikings’ first score of the game came from an 8-play, 72-yard drive led by Hilliard, who connected with Troy Smith for a 26-yard touchdown reception. The Vikings are scheduled to play at N.C. Central next Saturday and will return to Roebuck on September 19 to face CIAA opponent Virginia State.
