WHITMIRE, S.C. — Whitmire Community School in Newberry County, S.C., will cut the ribbon on its new $1.1 million on-campus tennis facility at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, giving the school’s tennis program a home of its own.
After the ceremony, the Whitmire girls tennis team is set to play its first home match on campus, hosting Eau Claire High School at 5:45 p.m. Families, students and community members are invited to attend the ribbon cutting and stay for the match.
The School District of Newberry County paid for the project as an investment in athletics for Whitmire students. District operations staff told the school board the courts were finished on Sept. 22. A late addition of $13,431 brought the total cost to $1,109,295, and paperwork was sent to the state Office of School Facilities for review and inspection.
Staff also told the board the courts are expected to stay locked during the tennis season, with community use in the summer handled through usage agreements.
Until now, Whitmire players have not had courts on their own campus for home competition.
