Newberry, SC – Jan Bennett Swygert, a cherished educator and philanthropist, passed away at the age of 73 on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at her home in Newberry. Her dedication to education and unwavering support for her community have left a lasting impact on many lives.
Born on March 2, 1952, in Newberry, Jan was the daughter of the late W.W. and Faye Cathy Bennett. She was predeceased by her sister, Cathy Bennett, but is survived by her husband of 46 years, Dennis Swygert, and their son, Bennett Swygert.
Jan’s illustrious career in education began after she graduated from Newberry High School in 1970. She went on to enroll in the University of South Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies/Education in 1974. Her commitment to lifelong learning took her further to graduate school, where she obtained a degree in Library Science in 1976.
Jan began her teaching career as a history teacher at Bishopville High School for one year. However, she dedicated the next 29 years as a librarian and media specialist in the Berkeley and Dorchester County School systems. Throughout her years in education, she worked at all grade levels, including elementary, middle, and high school, ultimately leading a library at Winsor Hill Elementary in the Dorchester 2 School District. Jan was passionate about creating welcoming library environments and focused her efforts on enhancing the learning experience for all students, particularly those with special needs.
Outside of her educational commitments, Jan was a proud coach’s wife, attending numerous Friday night football games to support her son, who signed with the Gamecocks as a quarterback. Jan enjoyed sharing her life with Dennis and spent 20 fulfilling years in retirement, where she engaged in various social activities, like playing cards and enjoying dinners out with friends. Some of her close companions included Olivia Hensley, Margaret Reibe, and Lynn Underwood.
Jan and Dennis found joy traveling across the country together, with Edisto Beach, Newport, Rhode Island, and Flagstaff, Arizona being among their favorite destinations. The couple’s adventures created lasting memories, further supported by their family.
Jan is also survived by her son, Bennett Swygert, his wife Lindsey, and her granddaughters Skyler and Harper Swygert. Additionally, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Duane Swygert (Bonnie), cousin Beth Thurmond (Sonny), stepson Christian Swygert (Tracy), stepdaughter Amanda Dease (Mark), and numerous step-grandchildren, including Jaymen, Cade, Mady, Olivia, Amelia, Caine, Trent, and Preston.
Her family expresses gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Amedisys Hospice during her final days, along with the support from friend Janis Gary. Following her passing, a private family burial and a celebration of life event will be held at a later date. In her memory, the family encourages contributions to Thornwell Orphanage and Boys Farm, both of which reflect her lifelong commitment to helping children.
Jan Bennett Swygert is remembered for her remarkable journey through life as a wonderful wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and a good friend. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched, inspiring generations of students and community members with her passion for education and philanthropy.
