Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Ann was the daughter of Willie and Dessie Derrick. She grew up in a large, close-knit extended family where gatherings were abundant. These family events allowed them to share both joys and burdens, creating a strong bond among relatives that lasted throughout her life.
Ann graduated from Dreher High School in 1958 and intertwined her passion for care and service with her education by attending the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing. During her time at nursing school, she developed lasting friendships, notably with Roxanne Elliott, who remained a significant part of her life.
Her nursing career took off when she began working at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. It was in Augusta where a pivotal moment occurred in her personal life: a blind date with Mac Smith, a young man serving in the military. They were married shortly after, on February 24, 1968, enjoying 57 years of marriage filled with mutual support and love.

Ann was known for her enthusiasm and dedication, attending countless sporting events and special occasions for her grandchildren. Her love for family included cherished pastimes such as playing Skip-Bo, puzzling, and dining out.
Ann’s contributions extended beyond her family life, reflecting her commitment to service within the community. She was known not just for her caregiving as a nurse but also as a supportive friend and neighbor, embodying the values of compassion and kindness in all her interactions.
Survived by her husband, Edmond M.
