Newberry County – The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced that part of SC 773 in Newberry County will be closed for bridge repairs over I-26 starting May 19. The closure is expected to last until July, during which time a signed detour will be implemented for drivers.

During this period, SCDOT urges motorists to slow down and remain attentive as they navigate through the work zone. Additionally, the westbound lanes of I-26 will undergo lane reductions due to repairs at various locations on the interstate, further advising drivers to be prepared for delays and to consider alternative routes.

Starting from April 28, SCDOT initiated lane closures on I-26 at the bridge over the Palmetto Trail at mile marker 83 and the bridge over Indian Creek at mile marker 65. These closures are anticipated to continue until the end of May, causing potential delays for travelers along this segment of the highway.

For larger vehicles exceeding 10 feet in width, there will be a specific detour route established. Trucks and other oversized vehicles will need to exit I-26 at S.C. 202 to follow the designated detour, ensuring safety and continuity of traffic flow as repairs are made.

Additional repairs are underway in Saluda County, affecting the S.C. 121 bridge over Big Creek. This repair work started on April 14 and is expected to be completed by the end of April. The recent incidents involving two accidents on I-26 raised concerns regarding the structural integrity of the SC 121 bridge, resulting in its closure for safety reasons.

For those needing to navigate around the closed SC 121 bridge, detours are available that involve taking Exit 74 onto Highway 34, then US-176 back to S.C. 121, or for southbound traffic from Exit 60 onto S.C. 121, proceeding onto Highway 76, and then back to Highway 34. At this time, there is no estimated reopening date for the SC 121 bridge due to the damage sustained.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allowing for extra travel time to mitigate the discomforts associated with road repairs and closures in both Newberry County and Saluda County. Up-to-date information on roadwork and repairs can be found on SCDOT’s official website, where details will continue to be posted throughout the duration of these necessary maintenance efforts.
