Exciting Wins for Newberry College Track and Field Teams in 2025!
Newberry, SC – The Newberry College men’s and women’s track and field teams had an absolute blast at the recent Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic, hosted by South Carolina State University. They truly shined with several impressive podium finishes across various events including sprints, hurdles, and field competitions.
Women’s Team Shines Bright
The ladies of Newberry College showcased their talent superbly! Freshman sensation Meah Jackson snagged a podium spot, taking 3rd place in both the high jump with an impressive clearance of 1.60m (5’3”) and the long jump with a leap of 5.40m (17’8.75”). Right behind her, Isabel Farup also impressed by finishing 5th in the high jump alongside Jameria Davis, who secured the 8th position after a jump of 1.50m.
Meanwhile, senior Irma Watson-Perez dazzled the crowd by winning the discus with a fantastic throw of 41.16m (135’0”) while also claiming 3rd in the hammer throw at 45.74m. Fellow thrower Andrea Pascual Rivera also shone, winning the hammer throw event with a remarkable distance of 49.84m (163’6”).
Budding star Kiori Butler proved her mettle by earning 4th place in both the shot put and javelin events. ShaNadia Marshall made her mark with top-five finishes in both the shot put and hammer throw as well. On the track, freshman Kamryn Adderton stamped her authority by finishing 10th in the 400 meters, and senior Ruby Hansen placed 10th in the 800 meters.
Wrapping up their day, the women’s 4x100m relay team consisting of Jackson, Rose, Davis, and Adderton sprinted to a 5th place finish, clocking in at 48.72.
Men’s Team Showcases Power
The guys brought their A-game as well! Senior Shamar Brown dominated the 400m hurdles, grabbing 1st place with a speedy time of 53.01. Sophomore Drew Benson followed suit by securing 1st in the 3000m steeplechase with a solid time of 10:17.74. Tyler Shumate added to the excitement with a remarkable performance in the 800 meters, finishing 2nd with 1:54.32.
Sean Price threw the crowd into a frenzy by winning the javelin event with a mighty throw of 58.35m (191’5”) while also throwing for 29.13m in the discus. Adding to the men’s points was Walker Flores, who finished 3rd in the hammer throw at 46.33m, and Jhayden Gattison, who placed 6th in the shot put.
Freshman Jamari Bennett was unstoppable in the 200 meters, finishing 8th with a time of 22.46s and leading the long jump with 6.13m. The men’s 4×400 meter relay team, made up of Brown, Thompson, Tucker, and Canty, sprinted to a 5th finish with a time of 3:17.71.
Cheerleading Team Joins the Fun
The excitement didn’t stop there! The Newberry College Cheerleading team also brought their spirit to the 2025 NCA & NDA College Nationals, finishing 8th in the prelims and 11th in the finals.
This weekend alone, they also competed at the SWU Gotta Run Invite, where they bagged 32 points to land 3rd after Day One
As they gear up to compete at the Electric City Invite in Anderson, SC, the forthcoming days are filled with anticipation. Not to mention, Irma Watson-Perez and Mia Dionisio earned spots on the NCAA All-Region team for their amazing performances this season as well!
