Newberry College Athletics Updates: Women’s Golf Team Shines While Men’s Team Gears Up

Newberry, South Carolina has been buzzing with excitement lately, thanks to the remarkable performances from the women’s golf team. Last week, they completed the Lady Bearcat Tournament held in Greenwood, and while they finished in 13th place with a score of 991 (+127), their consistent round scores of 331, 330, and 330 show they are on the right track!

Women’s Team Top Performers

When it comes to standout players, Blanca Noriega Villar led the pack, finishing tied for 40th place after scoring 78 (+6) for a total of 235 (+19). A shout-out goes to her for making spectacular birdies on both holes 13 and 14 in round 3. Natalia Aguilar also deserves a mention, wrapping up the tournament tied for 60th with a score of 80 (+8) and a total of 243 (+27), including a birdie on hole 6 during her final round.

Other notable performances included Ashton Moseley placing 77th with a total score of 261 (+43), and Chloe Tanner alongside Curstan Bunche finishing tied for 80th with scores of 270 (+52). Rounding out the women’s team, Alexa Anderson, competing as an individual, placed 84th with a score of 111 (+39) for a total of 327 (+108).

With their eyes set on the future, the team is gearing up for the South Atlantic Women’s Golf Championship, scheduled to take place at The Preserve at Verdae from April 6th to April 8th. It’s clear they are eager to continue their improvement!

Men’s Golf Team’s Performance at Bearcat Golf Classic

While the women were hitting the greens, the men’s golf team competed in the Bearcat Golf Classic hosted by Lander University, finishing 18th out of 19 teams. Notably, they brought in a total score of 300 (+12) for the tournament, with an opening round score of 304 on March 3rd.

Men’s Team Day One Highlights

Leading the way on day one were Herman du Plessis and Tom Hull, both scoring 75 (+2) and finishing tied for 46th place. Following them was Jesper Grendeman with a score of 76 (+4) for a tie in 60th place, and Carlos Camarous-Ruiz who scored 78 (+6), tying for 79th. Christian Kuehl wrapped up day one with a score of 81 (+9), landing in 98th place.

Impressive Day Two for Men’s Team

Turning things around a bit on day two, Tom Hull shone with an impressive score of 68 (-4), finishing tied for 41st overall. Christian Kuehl continued to perform well, scoring 76 (+4) for an 81st place tie. Both Herman du Plessis and Carlos Cámaros-Ruiz shot 78 (+6), tying for 62nd place, while Jesper Grendeman concluded the efforts with a score of 84 (+12).

Looking ahead, the men’s team is preparing for a match against Lincoln Memorial set for March 24-25. They are hoping to improve their standings and bring home a better outcome!

Women’s Team Triumphs at SSU Tiger Spring Invitational

In some exciting news, the women’s golf team recently secured first place at the SSU Tiger Spring Invitational, boasting a collective score of 662 over two competitive days. It was a display of skill and determination!

Individual Highlights

Among the top performers, Natalia AguilarBlanca Noriega took third place with a total score of 156. Other remarkable participants included Curstan Bunche in sixth place with a score of 176, Chloe Tanner in ninth with 179, and Ashton Moseley

With another tournament, the Lady Bearcat Invitational, lined up for March 24th-25th in Greenwood, SC., the women’s team is looking to add to their successes!
