Newark Soccer Team Advances in Section V Tournament
Newark, NY – In an exciting showdown on Thursday evening, the Newark High School boys soccer team secured a place in the semifinals of the Section V Class A Tournament after defeating Wayne Central 2-1 at home. The weather was mostly sunny during the day but turned overcast as the game progressed, with a comfortable temperature nearing 60°F.
The match began with a surprising twist as Wayne Central’s senior player, Avery Bustamante-Seadeek, scored a fluke goal in the first half. Bustamante-Seadeek’s shot from about 20 yards out took an unexpected arc that left the Newark goalkeeper fumbling, allowing Wayne Central to take a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
However, the Newark team, seeded third, came back strong in the second half. Senior attacker Kaiden Carr helped shift the momentum, scoring the match-winning goal with just seven minutes left on the clock. Newark’s second goal was also contributed by Deikan Bueg, bringing the final score to 2-1 for Newark.
This victory means Newark, with a season record of 16-2, now advances to face the second-seeded Brockport Central on Tuesday, October 29, at Gates Chili High School, with the match set for 7:30 p.m.
On the other hand, Wayne Central, now with a record of 12-6, concludes its 2024 season with this tournament exit. The Newark team will be training hard in preparation for their next match as they aim for a chance at the championship title.
