NEWBERRY, S.C. — Newberry Police Department investigators are trying to find out who opened fire at a block party early Saturday that left four people wounded, with no one in custody as of the department’s Sunday update.
Officers were sent to Wise Street near Holloway Street after reports of gunfire and found four people hurt. The block sits close to the downtown area of the city.
All four were treated at hospitals in both Newberry and Columbia. Their conditions have not been made public, and police have not said how many people fired or why the shooting started.
Police Chief Kevin Goodman said the case is at an early stage and that few of the people at the party have helped detectives so far. He called the gunfire a senseless act and said his investigators are working to identify those responsible.
Newberry County is one of four counties in the Eighth Judicial Circuit, and the Eighth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office would handle prosecution of any charges filed. That office also takes in Abbeville, Greenwood and Laurens counties.
Anyone who saw what happened can reach Newberry police at 803-321-1010.
