NEWBERRY, S.C. — Families trying to find out whether someone was booked into the Newberry County Detention Center, or how to visit them, can start with the sheriff’s office website.
The sheriff posts the names of people held at the jail because state open records law requires law enforcement to make public the records of anyone confined in the previous three months. The office says the list is meant to follow the law, not to embarrass anyone, and that everyone arrested is presumed innocent until a court rules otherwise.
Names come off the site 90 days after a person is released, or sooner if a court orders the record expunged. The online search has had technical trouble, so the office is posting its latest bookings as a PDF for now.
All visits happen by video, whether from the jail lobby or over the internet, which the office says keeps the facility and visitors safe. Visits are booked through the jail’s phone and video provider.
Older or more detailed records can be requested in writing from the sheriff’s office on Wilson Road, and the office charges a reasonable fee to search for and copy them. For anything urgent, the office says the only sure way to get help is to call 911, because its website, email and social media accounts are not watched around the clock.
Criminal cases from Newberry County are prosecuted by the 8th Circuit solicitor’s office, which covers Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties.
