NEWBERRY, S.C. — Heading out of town for the holidays? Newberry County deputies will swing by and check on your house while you are gone.
The sheriff’s office offers property checks for residents who are away on vacation, who have been the victim of a crime or who have another valid reason. Patrol deputies make the checks and log each one, though the office says they happen as calls and other demands allow.
A request covers only the time you will be away and cannot run longer than 30 days, though it can be renewed every 30 days for good reason. Residents can call the sheriff’s non-emergency dispatch line to have the form filled out over the phone, or download the form and email it in. Phone requests are processed the same day.
For people who want to harden their homes, the office’s community policing unit offers on-site security reviews and community crime watch meetings, and it posts a list of basic home security tips.
Inside the city limits, the Newberry Police Department says it is working on new strategies to prevent and solve crime through partnerships with the community.
