NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Newberry Opera House will turn Halloween night into a free movie night this year, launching an event it calls Opera-tion Hauntober on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Two films are on the bill. The family-friendly Hocus Pocus, rated PG, screens at 4 p.m., and the R-rated horror film The Shining follows at 7 p.m. Anyone under 17 needs a parent or guardian to attend the later show. Admission costs nothing, but seats are limited and guests must reserve a free ticket ahead of time; any seats left on the day may go to walk-ups.
Each screening opens with a lobby party an hour beforehand, with crafts and photo spots. Newberry College is teaming up with the venue on a guided ghost walk through the backstage dressing room level, and children get their own version of the walk.
Costume contests take place on the main stage just before the films. Kids compete in three age groups, from toddlers through teens, and the top three adult costumes win prizes. Real weapons and props that pose a safety risk are not allowed.
Operations director Nydia Garcia came up with the idea after noticing fewer Halloween events for families in recent years. Carolina Comfort is sponsoring the night.
