Newberry College’s field hockey team came up short in a rematch of last season’s NCAA Division II National Championship game, falling 2-0 to Shippensburg on the road in Pennsylvania.
The two programs met in a defensive battle for the first half, with neither side finding the back of the cage through the opening 30 minutes. Newberry managed one shot on goal during that stretch, while Shippensburg recorded two attempts on frame but could not convert. The deadlock broke less than three minutes into the third quarter, when Shippensburg scored to take the lead, and the Raiders pulled away in the second half to secure the shutout win.
The loss stings in part because of the history between the two programs. Shippensburg and Newberry met in the previous season’s NCAA Division II National Championship game, making this year’s early-season matchup a measuring-stick rematch for both squads as they look ahead to conference and postseason play. Saturday’s result gives Shippensburg the head-to-head edge in the budding rivalry heading into the rest of the season.
Newberry’s coaching staff and players will look to regroup quickly, with the Wolves continuing non-conference play before turning attention to their conference schedule later in the fall. The program has built a reputation as one of the stronger Division II field hockey teams in recent years, reaching last year’s national title game, and a single early-season setback against a top rival is unlikely to change that trajectory.
For Newberry College athletics, the field hockey program remains one of the school’s highest-profile teams given its recent championship-game appearance, and local fans will be watching closely to see how the Wolves respond in their next outings after Saturday’s defensive struggle against Shippensburg.
