PROSPERITY, S.C. — A county rivalry doubles as a title game Friday night when Newberry travels to unbeaten Mid-Carolina in Prosperity with the Region 3-2A crown up for grabs.
The Rebels are 9-0 overall and 4-0 in region play. Newberry comes in at 4-5 and 3-1 after winning three of its last four games following a 1-4 start. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
History leans hard toward the Bulldogs. Newberry owns a 30-12 edge in the all-time series and has beaten the Rebels 14 times in a row. A win would also give Newberry a third straight region title, a run the program has not put together since the mid-1970s.
For Mid-Carolina, the stakes include an outright region championship and a perfect regular season, both of which would end long droughts. Rebels coach Jody Haltiwanger is trying to become only the second Mid-Carolina coach, after Lon Armstrong in 1973, to beat Newberry in his first try.
Ryker Woolstenhulme paces the Rebels with 677 yards and 11 touchdowns, and Cash Knight has four interceptions to lead the defense.
