NEWBERRY, S.C. — Trick-or-treaters will have Main Street in Newberry to themselves again this Halloween. The city says the stretch from Kinard Street to Crenshaw Street will be closed to cars on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., and open to foot traffic only.
Police first blocked off that part of Main for Halloween last year, after officers went door to door asking people who live along the street whether a closure would cause problems. Barricades went up where Main meets Kinard and Crenshaw, side streets stayed open, and golf carts were not allowed inside the closed area.
Parking was the main concern then. Lots mentioned last year included Newberry A.R.P. Church at Main and Calhoun streets and the former Family Video lot at Main and Glenn streets.
The Newberry Opera House is adding to the night with its first Opera-tion Hauntober, a free event with two movie screenings. Doors open at 3 p.m. for lobby crafts, a photo booth and a costume contest before Hocus Pocus, rated PG, at 4 p.m. The opera house schedule sets aside 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for downtown trick-or-treating.
The Shining, rated R, follows at 7 p.m., and viewers under 17 need a parent or guardian. Before each movie, Newberry College helps lead a ghost walk through the building’s backstage dressing rooms.
