The Newberry High School Bulldogs faced a 39-28 defeat against Clinton on Friday, marking the 100th meeting in their historic rivalry. The game, held in Newberry, saw Clinton reclaim the CNNGA rivalry belt, which had been held by the Bulldogs since last season’s 41-12 victory over Clinton at Wilder Stadium.
Clinton’s senior quarterback, Owen Glenn, was a key factor in the win, rushing for 129 yards and passing for 73 yards. A pivotal moment occurred at the end of the third quarter when Glenn broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run, securing Clinton’s lead. Glenn was recognized as the CNNGA Player of the Game, an award sponsored by the Clinton-Newberry Natural Gas Authority for the past four seasons.
Newberry, now with a 1-2 record and ranked #9 in 2A, was outgained by Clinton, who holds a 2-0 record and is ranked #2 in 2A, with total yardage of 277 to 399. The game started with a setback for Newberry as a fumbled opening kickoff led to an early Clinton touchdown. Despite this, Newberry responded with a scoring pass.
Newberry’s sophomore quarterback, Sincerer Glymph, contributed significantly to the team’s effort, rushing for 122 yards and passing for 137 yards. The Bulldogs showed resilience throughout the game, including a scoring drive at the start of the second half and another touchdown late in the third quarter. Newberry’s team has shown improvement in recent years, moving from a 4-8 record in 2022 to 12-1 in 2026.
Clinton Head Coach Corey Fountain praised his team’s resilience, noting their ability to overcome mistakes and adapt with young players stepping up. He acknowledged Newberry as a tough opponent, particularly after their previous game where they conceded 70 points. Clinton will next face Chapman, a former region opponent known for its passing game, a different challenge from Newberry’s run-heavy quarterback offense.
