NEWBERRY, S.C. — About two dozen people lined a busy intersection in Newberry on Saturday for a No Kings demonstration that put getting out the vote ahead of protest slogans.

The turnout was smaller than at earlier No Kings rallies in the city of about 11,000, the fourth such event held there. Organizers said reaction from passing drivers was friendlier this time, with mostly supportive honks.

Saturday events were billed as nonpartisan and centered on voting. Roughly 20 were planned across South Carolina among thousands nationwide.

The timing matters for Newberry County voters. Early voting for the statewide general election runs Monday, October 19 through Saturday, October 31, with centers open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. In Newberry County, ballots can be cast at the county Voter Registration and Elections Office at 1872 Wilson Road, and voters need to bring a photo ID.

Election Day is Nov. 3. Along with a U.S. Senate seat, the ballot carries open races for governor, attorney general, comptroller general and agriculture commissioner.

The county leans heavily Republican. Trump won the county two years ago by a margin of more than 34 percentage points, close to twice his edge of nearly 18 points across the state.
