NEWBERRY, S.C. — Cooler fall days are good park days, and Newberry has more neighborhood parks than many residents realize. Here is a quick rundown of what the city runs and where.

The biggest is the Newberry Recreation Complex at 1786 Glenn Street Extension. It has three baseball and softball fields, four batting cages, two multipurpose fields, pickleball courts, a skate park, a nature trail and the Gully Washer Splash Park.

For a walk close to home, Dr. Ulysses S. Gallman Park on McSwain Street and U.S. Marshal Israel Brooks Jr. Park on Holloway Street both have walking trails, and Brooks Park adds a ballfield and three basketball courts. Dr. Julian E. Grant Park on Vincent Street has four basketball courts. Marion Davis Park on Fair Avenue offers horseshoe courts and two swings built for wheelchair users.

Disc golfers can play the newly redesigned nine-hole course at Margaret Hunter Park on Pope Terrace from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but bring what you need, since that park has no restrooms. Wells Japanese Garden on Lindsay Street keeps the same hours.

Willowbrook Park on Crosson Street, just over the railroad tracks from downtown, has a picnic shelter, playground and a Scout cabin that can be rented. Children and volunteers once painted much of the park during a community art day, and a quilt square on the cabin puts the park on the Newberry Quilt Trail. Shelter and cabin rentals are handled by the parks department at 803-321-1015.
