SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A Friday afternoon pursuit in Spartanburg County ended in a deadly three-vehicle crash at Highway 221 and Bryant Road, leaving a burglary suspect dead at the scene and sending two other people to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff Office said deputies tried to stop a man wanted on burglary charges around 12:50 p.m. Friday. The attempted stop became a chase that ended when the suspect vehicle collided with two other vehicles at the Highway 221 and Bryant Road intersection.

Highway Patrol described a northbound path onto Highway 221, also known as Chesnee Highway, where the fleeing vehicle struck a sport utility vehicle turning onto the highway, and that impact pushed the SUV across the center line into a pickup truck. The driver of the fleeing vehicle died at the scene. Occupants of the other two vehicles were taken to Spartanburg Medical Center with minor injuries, deputies said.

Highway 221 was closed while crews worked the scene and later reopened around 5 p.m. The Spartanburg County Coroner Office was on scene and on Saturday continued its review of the death as a forensic autopsy was scheduled. Officials said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Spartanburg County Sheriff Office, and the coroner office. Further updates are expected as those agencies finish their work on the Highway 221 collision.

Drivers in Spartanburg, S.C., were urged to allow extra time while the Chesnee Highway corridor was cleared Friday afternoon. Authorities have not released additional charge details beyond the burglary warrant that started the stop attempt.
