Republican U.S. Senate candidates Darline Graham and Ralph Norman engaged in their sole scheduled debate before next week’s special primary runoff election, exchanging criticisms and highlighting their differences. Early voting for the runoff begins Wednesday, with Election Day set for Tuesday, August 25.
Both candidates expressed agreement on certain issues, including supporting the prosecution of former White House adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci and working to reduce the national debt. However, the debate quickly became contentious.
Graham accused Norman of initially delaying the passage of President Donald Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill last year, suggesting Trump had to persuade him to support the measure. Norman defended his actions, stating his concerns were focused on energy subsidies. He explained that he sought to remove subsidies for electric cars, solar, and wind, believing these changes improved the bill, and that Trump ultimately agreed with his revisions.
A significant moment occurred during a discussion on foreign policy, specifically regarding whether tensions between China and Taiwan pose a threat to U.S. national security. Graham stated she was not well-informed on national security issues but affirmed her support for the military. Following the debate, Graham elaborated, acknowledging foreign policy is not her strongest area while recognizing China as a national security threat. She emphasized her campaign’s focus on economic concerns for South Carolinians, noting that voters are more concerned with their finances than with geopolitical issues like the South China Sea.
Norman responded to the foreign policy discussion by asserting that the United States should continue to support Taiwan’s ability to defend itself, describing the current presidential approach as peace through strength. Norman also offered personal praise for Graham, calling her a supportive sister to Senator Lindsey Graham during a difficult family period. However, he argued that candidates seeking a Senate seat must be prepared to address a wide range of issues, including foreign policy, suggesting it is not a position for on-the-job training.
